Veranstaltungdetails

Calling all book lovers! You like reading books and discussing them afterwards? Join our Book Club and discover the riches of international literature. Literature enthusiasts and language lover Jessica Strain will guide you through the best of contemporary and classic literature. Copies of the selected books are available at the d.a.i. library.

29.4. Barbara Kingsolver, The Bean Trees (1988): a tale of rural Kentucky native Taylor Greer, who only wants to get away from her roots and avoid getting pregnant. She succeeds, but inherits a three-year-old Native American girl named Turtle along the way, and together, half-Cherokee Taylor and her charge search for a new life in the West. Hers is a story about love and friendship, abandonment and belonging, and the discovery of surprising resources in seemingly empty places.

27.5. Marilynne Robinson, Gilead (2004): an intimate tale of three generations, from the Civil War to the 20th century: a story about fathers and sons and the spiritual battles that still rage at America's heart. A novel "as big as a nation, as quiet as thought, and moving as prayer. Matchless and towering." Gilead tells the story of America and will break your heart.

24.6. Eleanor Perenyi, Green Thoughts: A Writer in the Garden (1981) (essays): A classic in the literature of the garden, Green Thoughts is a beautifully written and highly original collection of seventy-two essays. An amateur gardener for over thirty years, Eleanor Perényi draws upon her wide-ranging knowledge of gardening lore to create a delightful, witty blend of how-to advice, informed opinion, historical insight, and philosophical musing.

29.7. Judy Blume, Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret (1970): Margaret Simon has a lot of things to think about – making friends in a new school, boys and dances and parties, growing physically "normal" and choosing a religion. With sensitivity and humor, Judy Blume has captured the joys, fears, and uncertainties that surround a girl approaching adolescence.
